Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat, typically measured by a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It results from an energy imbalance where calorie intake exceeds calorie expenditure over time. Obesity significantly increases the risk of developing a range of health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. Metabolic disorders encompass a variety of conditions that disrupt normal metabolism, the process the body uses to convert food into energy. Common metabolic disorders include Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, and Hyperlipidaemia. Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of metabolic disorders. Excess fat, particularly visceral fat around the abdomen, interferes with the body's ability to regulate insulin, leading to insulin resistance.
