Endocrinology and Diabetes
Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the endocrine system, which includes glands that release hormones into the bloodstream to regulate various body functions. These glands include the thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands, among others. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat conditions related to hormonal imbalances and endocrine disorders, such as thyroid diseases, growth issues, and metabolic disorders.
Diabetes is a chronic condition that falls under the purview of endocrinology. It involves the body's inability to regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels properly. There are two primary types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, and Type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by insulin resistance and often associated with obesity and lifestyle factors. Managing diabetes typically involves lifestyle modifications, blood sugar monitoring, and medications such as insulin or oral hypoglycaemic.
